The three light shows that set the holiday season in Chicagoland have published their 2026 dates, and all three open inside nine days of each other.

Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum runs Saturday, November 14, 2026 through Saturday, January 2, 2027 for its 14th season. The 35th Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival parade steps off Saturday, November 21. Lightscape at the Chicago Botanic Garden opens Friday, November 13 and runs through January 3, 2027. If you want your own house lit before the season starts, those dates are the deadline you are actually working against, because the residential install calendar fills in the weeks before opening night, not after.

The short version

Illumination: November 14, 2026 to January 2, 2027 in Lisle. Tickets go on sale October 1 for members and October 15 for the public, both at 9 a.m. CT.

Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival: Saturday, November 21, 2026. Parade at 5:30 PM, fireworks at 7:15 PM, free to watch.

Lightscape: November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027 in Glencoe. Member ticket access begins September 15.

Your own house: book by late September. Crews are scheduling October and early November now, and every date ahead of November 21 goes first.

What Is New at Illumination for Its 14th Season?

Illumination: Tree Lights is a ticketed evening walking trail of interactive light installations set among the trees at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois, running on select nights each winter since 2013.

The headline addition is an aurora borealis canopy stretching more than 400 feet overhead, and the Arboretum says it is running this season only. It is one of four new large-scale installations in a reimagined 2026-2027 route.

The other three are a tunnel of moving chrome spheres inspired by rain and dew, a hillside of glowing orbs with shifting patterns, and a Faerie Forest of firefly-like orbs and illuminated mushrooms.

There is also a new add-on worth knowing about if you are bringing kids: a model train winding through an indoor fantasy woodland in the Firefly Pavilion, with close to 1,000 feet of track. It is $7 for members and $9 for nonmembers on top of admission, it works with daytime admission as well as evening Illumination hours, and it keeps running after Illumination closes, through February 13.

For a 400-foot overhead installation the practical advice is the same one we give homeowners about rooflines: the effect lives in the sightline. Walk it once looking up, then walk the same stretch watching what the light does to the trees on either side. It reads as two different installations.

How Do You Get Illumination Tickets Before Your Date Sells Out?

Members buy October 1 at 9 AM CT, the public buys October 15 at 9 AM CT, and the cheapest tickets of the season sit in the member window between those two dates.

Those on-sale dates and prices come straight from the Arboretum.

Adult tickets start at $17.60 for members and $22 for nonmembers, members save 20 percent all season, and EBT or WIC cardholders pay $10 for adults and $5 for children through Museums for All.

The dates that disappear first are Friday and Saturday nights in December, especially the two weekends before Christmas. If you are flexible, a weeknight in the second half of November is the same exhibition with a fraction of the parking lot wait.

What Happens on Magnificent Mile Lights Festival Day?

The Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival is a free one-day street festival and evening parade on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago that switches on the avenue's holiday tree lights and opens the city's holiday season.

The festival's own schedule lays out Saturday, November 21 as a full day, not just a parade.

1
11 AM to 4 PM: Lights Festival Lane, festive booths at 401 N Michigan Avenue.
2
5:30 PM: the parade steps off at Oak Street and Michigan Avenue heading south, with Grand Marshals Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, illuminated floats, marching bands, giant helium balloons and Santa Claus on the Wintrust Grand Finale float.
3
7:15 PM: the Wintrust Fireworks Spectacular over the Chicago River at Michigan Avenue.

More than one million lights come on across 200-plus trees along the avenue as the parade passes. It is free to watch, which makes it the most crowded of the three, and the sidewalk spots near the river fill hours before the fireworks.

Which One Is Closest If You Are in the Northwest Suburbs?

Lightscape is a ticketed after-dark light trail through the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois, part of an international series of botanic garden light trails. It opens Friday, November 13, 2026 and runs through January 3, 2027, with member ticket access beginning September 15.

From Palatine and the surrounding towns the Chicago Botanic Garden is the short trip, roughly 20 miles east. The Morton Arboretum in Lisle is roughly 30 miles south, and North Michigan Avenue is roughly 33 miles southeast with parade-day street closures on top of the drive.

Practically: Lightscape is the weeknight-after-dinner option, Illumination is worth the drive and the timed ticket, and the Mag Mile festival is a plan-the-whole-day trip.

What This Calendar Means for Your Own House

The public shows open November 13, 14 and 21. Residential install crews are booked out well before that, because everyone wants their lights on for the same three weekends.

Late September is the practical booking deadline. October dates are largely gone by the first week of the month.
October is the busiest install month of the year, because it is the only one that serves Halloween on the 31st, Diwali on November 8, and the front end of the Christmas season.
The first two weeks of November are when Christmas installs run hardest, and every date before the 21st gets requested first.
After Thanksgiving on the 26th you are lighting the tail of the season rather than the season.

All-inclusive seasonal installs from Hanging Lights Club start at $799 and up, depending on the complexity, height and access of the job.

If you want a display that recolors for Halloween, then Diwali, then Christmas without a crew coming back, that is the RGBW C9 seasonal tier, and our Halloween lighting guide puts the three tiers side by side. For what actually moves the number on your house, see the Chicagoland cost breakdown. For the warm white side of the same install window, see our Diwali lighting guide.
