Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, November 8, and the light goes up long before the evening of the eighth if you want it done properly.

We install warm white Diwali lighting across Chicagoland three ways: a fixed color seasonal install from about $799, a color changing RGBW C9 seasonal install from about $1,400 that covers Halloween through Christmas from one install with Diwali in the middle of that run, or a permanent low profile system from about $3,000 that lives on the house year round. Seasonal installs are custom cut, maintained through the festival, and taken down afterward.

The Lakshmi Puja muhurat on November 8 is 6:29 PM to 8:29 PM. Your lights should be up, tested and on a timer well before that evening, not the afternoon of.

Book by early October. Diwali lands 18 days before Thanksgiving in 2026, which is exactly when every lighting crew in Chicagoland switches over to Christmas installs. The calendar tightens fast in the second half of October, and booking in September is the difference between picking your install date and taking what is left.

What the Five Days Ask of the Lighting

Diwali is not one evening, and the lighting decisions are different on each of the five days. Here is what each one actually needs from a display.

Dhanteras, Friday November 6. The lights should already be running. This is the real deadline, not the eighth, because Dhanteras is the day the house is meant to look ready. Any timer adjustment wants to happen before this evening.

Choti Diwali, Saturday November 7. The smaller lamps go out tonight. A roofline that is already steady in warm white lets the diyas at the entry be the thing that changes, which is the point of the evening.

Diwali, Sunday November 8. Everything is up and on before the Lakshmi Puja muhurat at 6:29 PM, and nothing is switched, dimmed or adjusted during it.

Govardhan Puja, Monday November 9. A working Monday for most Chicagoland families. This is the day a timer earns its place, because nobody is home at dusk to turn anything on.

Bhai Dooj, Tuesday November 10. The last of the five days and usually the busiest for visitors. Keep the walkway and the entry running later than the roofline, since people are arriving and leaving well after dark.

Why Warm White for Diwali?

Because it is the closest electric match to the light the festival is actually about.

A diya is an oil flame, and oil flame is warm, low and steady. Cool white and blue white LEDs read as clinical against brick, stone and stucco, and they fight with the diyas and candles you have already placed at the entry and along the railings.

Warm white also photographs better. Most families are taking pictures on the eighth, and a warm roofline behind a doorway of diyas holds together in a phone photo where a cool white roofline separates and looks like a security floodlight.

If you want color, we can do it. Colored and multi scene programming is available on the permanent systems. Our recommendation for the festival itself is still warm white on the architecture, with color used deliberately rather than everywhere.

Does Permanent Lighting Actually Pay for Itself?

It depends entirely on which seasonal option you would otherwise buy every year. A permanent roofline system runs about $3,000.

If you want color that changes per occasion, the honest comparison is the middle row, because nobody who cares about warm white for Diwali and orange for Halloween is buying the fixed color option. Against the color changing install you would actually buy, permanent pays for itself in a little over two years.

Commercial grade LED only. We do not install consumer retail strings or big box seasonal product.

Where the Light Actually Goes

For most occasions the roofline is the display. For Diwali it is the frame around the part that matters, and getting that hierarchy right is most of the job.

The doorway carries the meaning. Diyas, a rangoli and a lit entry are what the festival is about, and they sit at eye level. Everything on the roof is there to give them a background rather than to compete with them.

Match the height of the light to the height of the guest. A roofline is read at forty feet and a diya at four, so the two are doing different jobs. Get the entry right first and the roofline becomes the easy part rather than the expensive one.

Railings and columns, not only the eave. A porch railing picked out in warm white pulls light down to where guests are standing, which is where a five day festival is actually lived.

Skip the chase and strobe effects entirely. Movement is wrong for this one. Steady is what an oil lamp does, and steady is what the electric light above it should do too.

Leave the rangoli unlit from above. Downlighting flattens it. It is meant to be read by its own colors and by the lamps set around its edge.

Do the lights have to come down after the five days? No. A seasonal install is priced for the whole season rather than for the festival, so the same run stays up through Thanksgiving and Christmas and we remove it once at the end. If you light only for Diwali it still comes down at season end rather than on the eleventh.

What time should the lights come on for Lakshmi Puja? Before the muhurat rather than during it. The window on November 8, 2026 is 6:29 PM to 8:29 PM, so we set the timer to bring the display up in the late afternoon while it is still light. Nothing is then being switched on or fussed with once the puja has started.

What if a bulb goes out during the festival? We come out and fix it. In season maintenance is included on every seasonal install, so a failure during the five days is a phone call rather than a bill.

Who does the installation? Trained, experienced installers. We do not use seasonal day labor.
