Lake Ellyn, which gives the village half its character, is not natural: it was created in 1889 when village president Thomas Hill and businessman Philo Stacy dammed the waterway, and the boathouse still anchors the park around it. Stacy's Tavern, built in 1846, still stands at Geneva Road and Main Street and predates the village by nearly fifty years. The Metra station sits at 551 Crescent Boulevard in the heart of downtown, 22.4 miles out on the Union Pacific West line, with the Main Street Historic District beside it. College of DuPage is the largest employer at roughly 3,800 people, and the park district keeps 30 parks.
