The Unique Charm of Glencoe
Glencoe incorporated in 1869 and holds about 8,849 people across 3.78 square miles, separated from its neighbours by more than 1,200 acres of Cook County Forest Preserve. Its high ground runs about 690 feet along Green Bay Road. Architecturally it is remarkable for its size: the village holds the world's third largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright structures, with the Ravine Bluffs subdivision alone containing seven houses, a concrete bridge and three sculptural markers, alongside work by Howard Van Doren Shaw, David Adler, George Washington Maher, Benjamin Marshall and, at Writers Theatre, Jeanne Gang. Glencoe adopted Illinois's first zoning code in 1921. The Metra station dates to around 1891 on the Union Pacific North line, and the Chicago Botanic Garden sits at the northwest corner just outside village limits.
