Wheaton incorporated as a village in February 1859 and as a city in April 1890, and it has been the seat of DuPage County throughout. About 53,970 people live across 11.49 square miles, roughly 25 miles west of Chicago. The 1887 courthouse still anchors downtown, the Grand Theater has stood since 1925 and joined the National Register in 2005, and the Theosophical Society in America has kept a 42 acre headquarters estate here since 1926.
